That insight came from Allison O\u2019Toole, CEO of Second Harvest Heartland, at last week\u2019s\u202fGood Leadership Breakfast. More than 250 leaders gathered to hear from Allison, an extraordinary leader who has spent her career navigating public scrutiny, championing big missions, and leading with heart. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the years, Allison has pivoted through multiple careers: from her early days as a prosecutor, to leading the state healthcare organization MN Sure through crisis, and now as the CEO of one of the most influential hunger relief organizations in the country.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accountability with the Moonshot Strategy: Cut Hunger in Half by 2030<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

But what made this Breakfast so memorable wasn\u2019t just Allison\u2019s personal story, it was her explaining Second Harvest Heartland\u2019s bold \u201cmoonshot strategy\u201d\u202fto reduce hunger in the state of Minnesota by 2030.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s totally doable. We have the resources. We have the public will \u2013 it’s just going to take a much more active partnership than in the past,\u201d she declared. Allison also shared how this bold new vision required new clarity around what it takes to build a culture of healthy accountability, especially when you\u2019re aiming for something so bold. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s scary to publicly declare a huge, transformational goal,\u201d she said. \u201cBut it\u2019s also how we hold ourselves to a new level of accountability.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Allison\u2019s Success Habits<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It was fun for me to engage with a good leader who knows that accountability isn\u2019t something you push\u202fonto<\/em>\u202fyour team, it\u2019s something you\u202fbuild<\/em>\u202fwith your team, together. If you care about one another, and you are passionate about your mission, healthy accountability is how the team operates. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The people closest to Allison shared three success habits that define her leadership: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Delegation signals trust. <\/strong>\u201cYou are more successful when you fan out and create more collaboration.\u201d  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
      \n
    1. Authenticity and approachability builds buy-in. <\/strong>\u201cYou know, the truck drivers for Second Harvest come into my office anytime they need to talk to me about something. You\u2019re always going to get the real deal with me.\u201d  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      1. Encourage kind but direct feedback to reduce the fear of repercussion. <\/strong>\u201cClear is kind. I encourage people to move on after feedback. We have no time for drama.\u201d  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
