It means that the business of healthcare is a daily battle. And highly independent, powerful people only get along when their swords are turned toward the marketplace, not at one another. When the swords are \u201cpointed out\u201d they have each other\u2019s backs and are willing to fight for what they believe in. This is what we mean by \u201coutside-in\u201d thinking. The team <em>isn\u2019t<\/em> functional when they are pointing their swords at each other, that\u2019s \u201cinside-out\u201d thinking. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The outside-in vs. inside-out concept was important in this story, because the CEO\u2019s team was stuck for a while. Nobody was excited about the direction of the organization \u2013 because all their goals were inside-out focused. There was daily in-fighting and very little collaboration \u2013 they were forgetting the big picture, while everyone was protecting their own part of the business. \u00a0They were \u201cpointing their swords at each other.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>Why is healthy accountability so important for outside-in thinking?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Human beings are drawn to \u201cthe tyranny of today,\u201d willing to stop what they are doing to help someone who has a problem. And, we love the short-term satisfaction of stamping out fires and relieving the daily pains our employees bring us. But the more the leaders at the top are involved in the tyranny of today, the less likely the business is to run with an \u201coutside-in\u201d mentality.\u202f In an organization where healthy accountability exists, executives aren\u2019t pulled down in the day-to-day firefighting; employees seek accountability rather than waiting to be held accountable.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Healthy accountability allows top leaders to focus on winning against competitors with an outside-in perspective. When everyone in the organization embraces outside-in thinking, healthy accountability thrives because their actions are directly tied to the organizations success in the marketplace. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Sparking the mindset shift<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s the simplest equation I learned from my business mentors:\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-medium is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/3MagnifyGlass_GoodLeadership-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-29935\" style=\"width:319px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/3MagnifyGlass_GoodLeadership-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/3MagnifyGlass_GoodLeadership-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/3MagnifyGlass_GoodLeadership-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/3MagnifyGlass_GoodLeadership-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/3MagnifyGlass_GoodLeadership-610x610.jpg 610w, https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/3MagnifyGlass_GoodLeadership-600x600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/3MagnifyGlass_GoodLeadership-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/3MagnifyGlass_GoodLeadership.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Inside-out thinking = slow decay, decline and inertia\u202f\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Outside-in thinking = growth, competitiveness and positive momentum\u202f\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The discussion with the physician-led executive team that turned the tide involved two polarities:\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"1\">\n<li>What are we building that is special: to each other, our owners, and our customers?\u202f\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\">\n<li>What is our most credible threat we need to fight, that would hurt what we are building?\u202f\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both of those questions are \u201coutside-in\u201d and they bring out the competitive juices in\u202fexecutives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, how are you sparking Outside-In thinking?&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A CEO of a leading physician-led firm said to me, \u201cWe only get along when our swords are pointed out.\u201d \u00a0 What does that mean?
