When we hear about accountability in the context of public officials, its means one of two things:\u00a0 either &#8216;we will vote you out of office for not doing what we want you to do,&#8217; or &#8216;the media will find out about your weird life habits via social media and out you.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>What do we really mean?\u00a0 Aren&#8217;t we really asking people to take personal ownership over the things they promised to do?\u00a0 I much prefer &#8216;ownership&#8217; over &#8216;accountability&#8217; because ownership implies that I have control over the outcome.\u00a0 If I &#8216;own it&#8217; I can do what I need to &#8216;deliver it.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Is this play on words more than semantics and conjecture&#8230;or is this worth exploring?<\/p>\n<p>Actually, I do think there are some situations where the word Accountability is worth the emotional attention is captures.\u00a0 The best example is in &#8216;turnaround&#8217; situations.\u00a0 In organizations who have slowly eroded into complacency by accepting slipping sales as the daily routine\u2026the word Accountability is a good wake up call.\u00a0 But how do good leaders make that wake up call &#8216;positive?&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>There are two &#8220;C&#8221;s in the word accountability:\u00a0 the c-word that gets all the attention is &#8220;consequences.&#8221;\u00a0 That&#8217;s where the fear comes from.\u00a0 But the most powerful word is often overlooked \u2014 or at least underplayed.\u00a0 The most important c-word is &#8220;care.&#8221;\u00a0 The missing ingredient in most accountability movements, is that leaders forget (or ignore) the strategy that says first:\u00a0 I &#8220;care&#8221; about you, and your success \u2014 I really want you to succeed.\u00a0 Not only that, but I understand who you want to be when you grow up\u2026and I&#8217;ll do everything I can to help you succeed now, as a step to getting you there.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 When followers hear that sincere message, they are almost certain to take personal ownership of the situation, and gladly accept the notion of &#8216;consequences.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>With so many enterprises clawing their way back into prosperity, the &#8220;accountability movement&#8221; is in full swing.\u00a0 Have you demonstrated that you care about the well-being of the people who are so important to your success?\u00a0 If you think &#8216;yes&#8217; that&#8217;s a good start.\u00a0 The magic begins when the people who follow you really think, feel and know that you care.<\/p>\n<p>Who needs to know that you care today?[\/fusion_builder_column][\/fusion_builder_row][\/fusion_builder_container]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=&#8221;yes&#8221; overflow=&#8221;visible&#8221;][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=&#8221;1_1&#8243; background_position=&#8221;left top&#8221; background_color=&#8221;&#8221; border_size=&#8221;&#8221; border_color=&#8221;&#8221; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221; spacing=&#8221;yes&#8221; background_image=&#8221;&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;no-repeat&#8221; padding=&#8221;&#8221; margin_top=&#8221;0px&#8221; margin_bottom=&#8221;0px&#8221; class=&#8221;&#8221; id=&#8221;&#8221; animation_type=&#8221;&#8221; animation_speed=&#8221;0.3&#8243; animation_direction=&#8221;left&#8221; hide_on_mobile=&#8221;no&#8221; center_content=&#8221;no&#8221; min_height=&#8221;none&#8221;] With so many enterprises clawing their way back to prosperity, the &#8220;accountability movement&#8221; is in full swing.\u00a0 Businesses are asking employees to be more accountable.\u00a0 Media pundits and politicians are clamoring [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[31],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-28353","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-success-habits"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.3.1 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>What&#039;s the flaw in the Accountabilty movement?
